It’s time to look at the best and worst employers in Boston, but before we get to the list, allow us to share a few thoughts: First, we’re going to stick with the usual method of identifying the top employers in Boston—by looking at survey results released by our city’s Chamber of Commerce.

As a follow up to the post we made yesterday on the top 25 employers in New York City, we thought it would be good to take a look at some of the top employers in Boston. The Boston area (and Massachusetts, in fact) is home to many Fortune 500 companies, but Boston also has some smaller technology and life science firms that are doing great work. We decided to take a look at the top 25 employers in Boston, based on their revenues.

I’ve never had an executive job, although I have been in management positions. I was the top salesperson at a company some of you may know, and a top performer in sales at another, and I’ve worked with a number of executives in the Boston area. Whether I’m a banker or not, I think that working for a great employer is what matters most, and I’ve spent a lot of time searching for the top 25 employers in Boston.

The top 25 employers in Boston

LinkedIn recently revealed its list of Boston’s finest employers. They ranked the best 25 companies to work for if you want to advance your career. Hospitals, banking, technology, and retail are all on the list.

Companies with at least 50 employees were graded according to the seven criteria below:

  1. Ability to progress
  2. Enhancement of abilities
  3. Stability of the business
  4. External possibility
  5. Affinity between companies
  6. Gender equality
  7. Background in Education

Methodology

LinkedIn ranked firms in the seven areas stated above based on their data. The following are the categories they used to define them:

  1. Based on defined job titles, Ability to Advance records employee promotions within a firm and when they move to a new organization.
  2. Using defined LinkedIn skills, skills growth examines how people throughout the firm are learning abilities while engaged at the company.
  3. The percentage of employees that stay at the firm for at least three years, as well as attrition over the previous year, are tracked by company stability.
  4. External opportunity examines recruiter outreach to the company’s personnel, indicating a desire for workers from these firms.
  5. Company affinity focuses the employee connection volume on LinkedIn, adjusted for company size, to determine how supportive a company’s culture is.
  6. Gender variety refers to a company’s gender balance.
  7. Finally, educational background investigates the range of educational attainment among employees, from no degree to Ph.D., indicating a commitment to hiring a diverse workforce.

Companies must have at least 50 employees in the city by April 30, 2021 to be eligible, and staff losses (including attrition and layoffs) cannot exceed 10%. (based on LinkedIn data and public announcements, respectively).

The city lists separate subsidiaries from their parent firms, although LinkedIn’s yearly Top Companies list includes just parent companies (data on majority-owned subsidiaries is factored into the parent company score). Across the pool of organizations eligible for the list, all data counts are standardized depending on company size.

May 1, 2020 through April 30, 2021 is the methodology’s time span. All of the data is de-identified and/or aggregated.

All staffing and recruiting organizations, educational institutions, and government agencies were prohibited from LinkedIn. LinkedIn, its parent firm Microsoft, and Microsoft subsidiaries were also banned.
