The United States has a lot of small towns, and most of them are safe enough. In order to determine which are the 25 safest small towns in America we took into account both violent crime rates as well as property crimes per capita.

Many Americans want for stability in 2022 after two years of turmoil brought on by the epidemic, politics, and social unrest. During COVID-19 surges, many Americans evacuated metropolitan cities or fantasized of doing so. It has its attraction to seek solace in America’s smaller cities and towns, but how much safer are small communities really?
MoneyGeek quantified the cost of crime and ranked tiny cities and towns countrywide and in each state to test the hypothesis that these areas are the safest in the United States. This study was conducted in response to MoneyGeek’s earlier rating of the safest major cities in America.

Major Findings
- According to the most recent statistics available, the cost of crime in small cities grew by 12 percent between 2019 and 2020. The expense of crime increased by 15% in the typical American metropolis over that time.
- The safety of small towns and cities is double that of large ones. According to our data, cities and towns with a population between 30,000 and 100,000 had a median cost of crime of $640 as opposed to cities with a population exceeding 100,000, where the median cost of crime was $1,320.
- A tiny town or city might be as hazardous as a big one. Petersburg, Virginia, has a per capita cost of crime of $9,022, which is almost as high as St. Louis, Missouri, where it is $11,574. The cost of crime per capita in Federal Way, Washington (pop. 97,071) is $1,203, which is similar to New York City ($1,204).

How to Determine the Cost of Crime
Communities are negatively impacted by crime, both emotionally and financially. Residents in areas with greater crime rates often pay higher rates for vehicle insurance, homes insurance, and renters insurance, in addition to direct expenditures from property damage, services for victims, and police and prisons.
MoneyGeek examined crime statistics and determined the cost of crime in each location to quantify the cost of crime in smaller cities and villages. We gathered information on both property crimes like auto theft and burglaries as well as violent crimes like murder and serious assault. Violent crimes are more expensive even if property crimes are far more frequent.
The safest and least safe small cities and towns, those with 30,000 to 100,000 population, were determined by MoneyGeek’s analysis of crime data and quantification of the costs of such crimes.
The Northeast and Midwest are home to the majority of America’s safest small towns and cities, with four of the top 10 cities located in New York or New Jersey, three in Illinois, and three in Massachusetts. The municipalities with the worst safety records are more widely dispersed throughout the nation, with Petersburg, Virginia, at the top.

Methodology
MoneyGeek used standardized crime data supplied to the FBI to determine the safest small towns and localities in the United States. The research used population data obtained from the FBI to calculate crime rates per 100,000 people. MoneyGeek narrowed its emphasis for this investigation to places with a population of between 30,000 and 100,000 people.
The study by professors Hai Fang of the University of Colorado Denver and Kathryn McCollister of the University of Miami was used by MoneyGeek to calculate the cost of crime to society. To better comprehend the social costs of crime in specific cities, their results were included into the larger data set.
