The average tax refund for the United States is around $3,000. This number varies by state with some states giving much more than others and receiving less in return. If your state falls within the top ten that have the highest refund averages you could get up to $6,000!

The “average tax refund for a single person” is the amount of money that you can expect to receive back from the government. The amount of money that you will get back depends on your state, and how much income you had. Read more in detail here: what is the average tax refund for a single person.

What's the average tax refund in your state?

To commemorate Americans’ yearly ritual of settling their accounts with Uncle Sam, LendingTree experts examined the most recent IRS statistics to find which states’ residents received the largest average refunds — and which received the fewest. We also investigated the areas where taxpayers owe the greatest money.

The average refund for tax year 2019 (the most recent data available that covers all returns) was $3,651, which was somewhat lower than the average refund of $3,660 in tax year 2018.

After overspending throughout the year, several Americans anticipate a large tax return. With increasing gas costs and inflation, a tax refund may be an excellent way to gain a much-needed cash boost.

Important discoveries

Depositphotos_156328028_m-2015_jP8emvD

  • In the most recent available statistics, three-quarters of U.S. taxpayers got a refund of $3,651 on average. That’s almost comparable to the $3,660 average from the previous tax year.
  • Wyoming taxpayers earned the greatest average tax refund, $5,027. Wyoming has topped the list for the second year in a row, gaining 8% from $4,602 the prior tax season. Connecticut ($4,461) and New York ($4,444) came in second and third, respectively.
  • Maine taxpayers earned the least average tax refunds, totaling $2,752. Maine was last the prior tax season as well, with a $2,743 total. Oregon ($2,896) and Vermont ($2,924) had the lowest average refund in the tax year 2019, slightly ahead of Maine ($2,924).
  • In the tax year 2019, little over a fifth (21%) of American taxpayers owed the IRS money, with an average debt of $5,893. Massachusetts residents owing the highest ($7,605), Wyoming ($7,541), and Washington ($7,145). With 26 percent of taxpayers owed refunds, California led the way, followed by four states with 25 percent.

Refunds were given to 75% of US taxpayers.

Depositphotos_143495533_m-2015

In 2019 — the most recent tax year for which data on all returns is available — three-quarters of filers got a federal tax refund (including single, joint and head of household returns).

The average refund among US taxpayers was $3,651, roughly comparable to the $3,660 average in the previous tax year (2018).

Despite the fact that 75% of taxpayers got a return in 2019, LendingTree chief credit analyst Matt Schulz warns against getting too excited. Rather of focusing on a large return, Schulz suggests that individuals attempt to reduce their tax burden to zero.

“While getting a hefty return may seem great, the fact is that you’ve overpaid and effectively given the government an interest-free loan for no reason,” Schulz adds. “That’s significant because that money might have gone toward paying expenses throughout the year, building an emergency fund, or even paying off debt.”

Though Schulz isn’t a huge proponent of overpaying taxes, he says there are times when a refund makes sense.

“A hefty refund can make sense if you don’t trust yourself to be prudent with the additional money you’d get over the year,” he adds. “However, only if you put it to good use.”

More over one in every five Americans owing money in taxes.

taxes-wed

While the majority of taxpayers will get a refund, around one in every five Americans (21%) will owe Uncle Sam money. $5,893 was the average tax bill.

Massachusetts residents were the worst hit, with an average tax bill of $7,605. Residents in Wyoming, who received the biggest average refunds, also had the second-largest tax bills, averaging $7,541.

The top five states with the highest average tax bills were Washington, Connecticut, and New Hampshire, also from New England. While 21% of taxpayers in the United Areas owed taxes, the chance of owing taxes was greater in various states. Californians, known as the Golden State, had the greatest proportion of taxpayers parting with their money, at 26%.

One in every four taxpayers in the District of Columbia, Maryland, Colorado, and Oregon owing the IRS, behind only California. Although the average amount owing was smaller than in the other five states, a higher proportion of people owed the IRS. The average refund in Oregon was also the second lowest.

What should you do if you’re having trouble paying your taxes?

Depositphotos_11205825_m-2015

The IRS provides tax debt relief options if you’ve been confronted with a large tax bill and are having trouble paying it, or if you owe back taxes. Short-term payment plans, long-term payment plans lasting longer than 120 days, and compromise offers are all examples. You’ll want to see whether this is the best match for your requirements since many of these programs have restrictions on the amount of taxes owing and others contain fees.

There are other tax debt reduction organizations that function as go-betweens for you and the IRS, but tread carefully. Scammers might collect your personal information under the guise of tax relief. Most of these businesses utilize the same systems that the IRS provides to people directly, so you may be better off dealing with the IRS directly.

Methodology

Depositphotos_24313963_m-2015

The IRS’ Statistics of Income program was used to evaluate federal individual income tax returns (Form 1040s) submitted from January 1, 2020, to December 31, 2020, for tax year 2019 – the most recent data available.

This data also covers paper returns submitted until mid-July 2021 for tax year 2019 due to processing delays caused by the COVID-19 epidemic. A small number of returns for tax years before to 2019 are also included, according to the IRS. This is a “proxy for returns that are generally submitted outside the 12-month timeframe,” according to the IRS.

Researchers calculated the total amount reimbursed by the number of persons who got refunds to get the average refund in the United States and each state. Researchers divided the total amount owing by the number of persons who owed taxes to determine who owed money.
